Is a higher puncture strength always better for aluminum foil bags?
April Mon , 2025

In daily life and industrial production, aluminum foil bags are widely used because of their excellent barrier property, moisture resistance and preservation. However, for the quality judgment of aluminum foil bags, many people have a common misunderstanding: that "the greater the puncture strength, the higher the material hardness, the better the packaging quality." Is this really the case? Let's uncover the truth about the puncture strength of aluminum foil bags through a scientific perspective.

Puncture strength, usually in the laboratory, is the force required to use a metal needle to break the surface of the foil bag film until it breaks. This index is mainly affected by the material, thickness and hardness of the aluminum foil bag. In theory, a four-layer structure (such as PET/PA/AL/PE) aluminum foil bag has a higher puncture strength than a three-layer structure (such as PET/AL/PE); Similarly, the increase in thickness or the hardening of the material will also increase the puncture strength value.

However, real-world transport environments are far more complex than laboratory conditions. We prefer aluminum foil bags with large puncture strength, which is more resistant to falling and more durable. But in actual transportation, these "hard" bags are more likely to break the bag, which is why?

1. When vacuuming

When the aluminum foil bag with high hardness is vacuumed, the corner of the contents (such as the circuit board and other angular items) and the contact point of the aluminum foil bag may break the aluminum foil due to pulling, and then puncture the inner PE film, resulting in broken packaging. This is difficult to show in laboratory puncture tests.

2. Under impact

The aluminum foil bag with high hardness is brittle, especially the inner aluminum foil film as a metal material, which is easy to break under severe external impact. In contrast, the low-hardness aluminum foil bag can absorb the impact force through deformation, reducing the risk of rupture.

3. Fold and squeeze down

The aluminum foil bag with high hardness will produce fine cracks after repeated folding or extrusion, and these cracks will expand into holes when encountering bumps, and eventually lead to broken bags. On the contrary, the low hardness of the aluminum foil bag composite strength is higher, the inner PE film is softer, and it is not easy to break when folded.

Therefore, the puncture strength can not be used as the only standard to judge the performance of aluminum foil bags. In the purchase of aluminum foil bags, in addition to paying attention to the puncture strength, it should be combined with the actual application scenario, and consider the flexibility, impact resistance and other comprehensive properties of the material.

XCGS aluminum foil bags typically have a three - or four-layer construction (PET/AL/CPE or PET/AL/NY/CPE). Customers can customize the mechanical properties of aluminum foil bags, puncture strength and tear strength, as well as air barrier, anti-oxidation, waterproof, moisture-proof and other properties. At the same time, the aluminum foil bag with anti-static liquid coating process also has anti-static effect, which further broadens its application field.

XCGS is a company specializing in integrated packaging solutions, with more than 20 years of experience, and has set up six production bases and eight factories at home and abroad. If you have related needs, you can contact us, we will be happy to serve you!
